We took a little day trip to Three Rivers State Park near Sneads, Florida. This park is near the south western edge of Lake Seminole. The shoreline to the east is western Georgia near Donalsonville, Georgia.
During a short hike down the nature trail we came across some amazing views across the lake. An armadillo was active in the area stomping loudly through the under brush. Numerous birds could be seen flying overhead. There were ducks on the calm waters of the lake and a large water bird was standing on an outcropping of sand and mud all alone.

Shortly after I was able to set up my Yaesu FT-891 and my as yet untested half wave end fed using a matching transformer that I had purchased from Amazon. I was running 100 watts and the set up worked remarkably well and I made a number of contacts. The antenna worked very well, I didn’t even need to use my tuner. I do want to try a smaller gauge of wire since my carbon fiber mast was bent over quite a lot. Soon it was getting dark very quickly, so my activation didn’t last long. The bands were crowded as well with the ARRL Sweepstakes contest.
Once darkness was falling, I rolled up my antenna and put away my gear. The bats were flying and the bugs were biting as well. All in all it wasn’t too bad of a day to do some nature, get in some radio time and spend some quality time with my family to boot.
On the way out of the park we came across some deer who were crossing the road. We stopped and waited and they crossed in front of our car before we headed home.
